Have you always wanted to visit the Amazon? To observe hundreds of different tropical birds, see monkeys in the wild, swim with dolphins, or venture out at night to search for snakes and spiders? How about watching anacondas, caimans, or river otters in their natural habitat?

Then you're in the right place – In collaboration with my indigenous friends from the Kichwa tribe I organize camping trips deep into the Ecuadorian rainforest.

NEXT TOUR DATE: AUGUST 2-23, 2024

I first visited the Amazon in 2015 and immediately lost my heart to the pristine wilderness and its inhabitants. Since then, I have spent more than four months there, getting to know and love the Amazon, the indigenous people who live there, and the incredible diversity of plants and animals. I would be thrilled to share this experience with you.

In 2022, I organized the first tour with six other participants. Everyone was thrilled by the two-week journey. We saw various species of monkeys, birds, snakes, spiders, and insects of all kinds. We swam with dolphins, got to know the land and the locals, fished, traveled extensively by canoe, and camped in the untouched rainforest. And above all, we witnessed the wonders of wild, untouched nature.

What I offer

I will organize your entire trip, from Quito Airport to Quito Airport.

After an overnight stay near the airport (simple but clean hotel), we’ll fly on the first day directly to San Francisco de Orellana, the city closest to the Amazon with an airport. After a 30-minute flight, we’ll hop into cars that will take us – with a stop for lunch in Shushufindi, the last town before the jungle – directly to the Río Aguarico.

Here, we finally board the canoe and travel downriver into the Cuyabeno National Park. This is where we’ll set up our first camp (a wooden platform with a thatched roof). We’ll spend a few nights here to acclimate, go on our first excursions, and learn how to move safely and freely in the rainforest.

Over the next two weeks, we’ll visit four different locations, spending a few days at each one. The campsites are mostly platforms with roofs, so they are completely safe and even have toilets and showers.

THEN things will get even more adventurous – we’ll spend a few nights camping directly in the forest. This means tents on the forest floor, no toilets, and washing in the river or lagoon. We will be right on the Peruvian border, far removed from any human civilization.

Garza Cocha, one of the lagoons we’ll visit, is an incredibly wild, untouched place with breathtaking biodiversity and stunning, untamed nature. Zancudo Cocha, the other lagoon on our route, is the largest lagoon in Ecuador. Here, we’ll be able to observe giant river otters, enormous caimans, anacondas, and many other Amazonian animals.

After these two weeks, we’ll return to the first campsite for a few nights, to rest and reflect on all we’ve seen and experienced before heading back to Quito.

I promise you’ll never forget this trip. You’ll recount your experiences for years to come and often look back on this journey with fond memories.

Cost and What’s Included

I offer this all-inclusive trip from the Ecuadorian capital, Quito. Flights to Quito must be booked independently (though I’m happy to assist).
Included are two domestic flights, two hotel nights, and all transfers from the airport into the rainforest. You’ll have three hot meals per day. We’ll have a team with us, including canoe driver, a cook, helper and an English-speaking guide, all from the Kichwa tribe who have lived in the rainforest for centuries.

The activities are varied – daytime and nighttime walks through the forest, canoe expeditions with both motorized and small paddle canoes, and swimming in lagoons and rivers. We learn firsthand about living with and from nature, about edible and medicinal plants, the diverse ecosystems, the incredible biodiversity, and how the “seasons” continuously reshape the forest. For those interested, there’s also plenty of fishing – over 300 different fish species of all sizes. And if we’re lucky, we might spot a jaguar, an eight-meter-long anaconda, or even the mystical harpy eagle!

The entire journey, lasting 21 days, costs €2,720. You’ll be fully provided for except for alcoholic drinks, with water, tea, and coffee included.

Tents, sleeping mats, pillows, and blankets should be brought along, but they can also be rented for an additional fee.

Why I Do This

In short – to help my friends on-site earn an income.

I don’t make any money from these trips, nor is it my intention to do so. The indigenous population has almost no means of earning an income aside from tourism (which is very limited in this part of the world), the oil industry, or the palm oil industry.

Schools and healthcare must be privately funded, and the financial struggle to survive is very real in this region. Since my friends and acquaintances all have experience working with tourists, I’m doing the most natural thing – trying to promote sustainable, nature-based tourism in this region.

All income from the trips is fairly divided among the team. This gives these wonderful people a fair income, which is quite good by local standards. It strengthens the entire indigenous community and directly contributes to the preservation of the pristine rainforest.
